Remember Gaga's Meat Dress?

The nominees for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA's) were released last night. It's no surprise that after a record number of number one hits on a single album, Katy Perry leads the VMA's with nine nominations, including one of the biggest honors, Video of the Year for her track Firework.
Tied for second place are British newcomer Adele and Kanye West, who have each been nominated for seven awards. Adele's single Rolling in the Deep is the only song recognized in all seven of her nominations whereas Kanye was recognized for his singles All of the Lights, Power, and his collaboration with Katy Perry in ET.
I know what you're thinking, 'where are the usual frontrunners?' Where's Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Eminem and where the heck is Lady Gaga? She broke a VMA record last year for 13 nominations and this year, believe it or not, she's scored merely three nominations.
The thing with the VMA's that seperates them from other music award shows is that the winner is not based solely on sales or chart rankings. If that was the case Gaga would be up there alongside Katy Perry, no doubt about it. In some categories, sales don't even matter, chart rankings are not even a factor, instead, the basis is more technical, like the vision behind the song.

The 28th annual MTV VMA's will air live from L.A. on August 28th, at 9:00 p.m.
