If you have seen the summer comedy
Bridesmaids than you know that alongside Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy steals the movie with her hilarious performance. If you haven't seen it, what are you waiting for?
2011 seems to be a big year for McCarthy who made waves with her comedic performance as Megan in
Bridesmaids and who has recently been nominated for an Emmy for her depiction as Molly in the sitcom
Mike & Molly. That being said, it comes as no surprise that GQ has decided to interview the rising star and find out some more details regarding her work and personality.
The article delivers a variety of perspectives from McCarthy's co-stars, directors, her husband, and of course, herself. For instance, the actress describes how she prepped for her role as Megan:
"I read the script and had such a weird, fast reaction to Megan. I knew exactly what I wanted her to look like, to sound like, and I got an intense feeling of "I like her so much! This will never work out!" For the audition, I wore no makeup and a bad pant. Once I look like the character, it really locks me in, even if people sometimes say, "We need you not to be repulsive.""
She further describes her own uncertainty regarding how she pitched Megan in her audition. If you haven't seen the movie, there is a spoiler coming up. What she did worked because they decided to take her lead. Those who watched the movie, did you also feel as though Megan was a lesbian at first? Well, that was all McCarthy!
" I love those no-bullshit women with close-cropped hair that you'll see together and think, "Is that her partner?" Then they talk about their husbands and six kids. I just love anybody who's that comfortable in her own skin. But the whole ride home from the audition, I was thinking, "I got too weird. Should I turn the car around and do that cheesy actor thing of 'I can do it better! Give me another shot!' "
Also, did you notice how odd Megan's wardrobe was in the movie? I distinctly remember thinking at one point "why are her nails so long, she's a tomboy?" That was also courtesy of McCarthy's creative genius:
"Her wardrobe in this movie was its own character: "If I have these horrible culottes on and this golf shirt, maybe I should have long fingernails and pearls...."" said Kristen Wiig who played Annie.
I'll leave you with some kind words from Bridesmaids director Paul Feig.
"Let any debate about "women aren't funny" be put to rest. I would do anything with her, and she's got such range that she kind of can do anything. The worst thing you could do, if you had a Melissa McCarthy in your employ, would be, "Can you just stick to the script?" But that happens a lot. Why the fuck would you ever do that?" Feig tells GQ.
