At first, this is going to seem like sad news for Glee fans, so I'm just going to come out and say it. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Glee creator Ryan Murphy announced that Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer, and Lea Michele will not be returning for season 4.
“You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.”
Here is why this is not entirely sad news. Yes, we will miss them on Glee, that is a given, but this is opening the door for more opportunities, bigger opportunities.
Example: Taylor Kitsch made his entrance playing Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights. He owned that role for a solid three seasons and then, there just was little room for him to advance or grow as a character. To keep him on the show, he was held back a year from graduating, he tried the whole college thing but then came back to Texas, and finally, he decided to stay in town and work for his brother. Ultimately, he had to be removed as a series regular in order to stay true to the character he had been playing for over four years. Fans were sad, but in the end it was for the best because now Kitsch is making huge blockbuster movies!
You know this makes perfect sense, you're just frustrated that I always come back to Friday Night Lights as my voice of reason. By the way, have you started watching that show yet?
So yes, be sad, it is the end of something great! Glee might not be the same without them (it wont). But also, be happy because if they play their cards right, this also means more exposure for the young talent and bigger and better things for their fans to watch.
And who knows, maybe there is a spin-off show in the works!
