Playing on the once popular 80's theme of body swapping, The Change Up reinvents the genre with the addition of vulgarity, nudity, witty one liners, and yes, even some bathroom humor. Mitch (Ryan Reynolds) and Dave (Jason Bateman) are two childhood best friends who are nothing alike. Mitch has managed to remain in a perpetual state of childhood, rejecting any form of employment and responsibility. His sole drive is finding a new beautiful woman to fill the empty spots in his...week. Then, there's Dave, a workaholic lawyer, father of three, and husband who has lost all zeal for life.
At a moment of weakness, while peeing in a fountain, the two wish for each others life, and the universe plays a cruel trick on them.
Jason Bateman starts off in that stereotypical role you've seen him play a thousand times -- the straight-edge man of reason who is somehow always lured in to drama. In The Change Up, he transforms in to a reckless, crass being that the viewers have yet to see Bateman tackle. He is definitely outside of his comfort zone with this role but he nails it.
His co-star, Ryan Reynolds delivers a solid comedic performance, successfully selling himself as both the steady rock and the insane sex addict without any borders. The latter is definitely always more entertaining.
Just a note: don't go see this movie with a family member unless you're very comfortable with them. I ran in to a conservative aunt and unlce who I ended up sitting next to. I spent every sex scene cringing, every nude scene biting down on my tongue, wanting to look over and see their expressions. I'm almost 23 years-old and I wanted to close my eyes at times.
Who knew we'd both have advanced screening tickets? That's not very likely...
The Change Up comes out on August 5th. Take a look at the official trailer:
