Have you heard? Rihanna and Chris Brown are now following each other on Twitter. Why’s this a big deal? Well, unless you have been living under a rock, you should know that Rihanna and Chris Brown were previously a couple. That all ended when he severely beat her up and images of her battered face were leaked to the media.
Rihanna’s separation from Chris Brown and her strength thereafter has made her a strong role model for women who have struggled or continue to struggle with abusive relationships. Some of her fans have vocalized their unhappiness with this act, because it seems to be indicating a step towards forgiveness.
I doubt it, but a step towards acceptance is more likely.
When a fan tweeted Rihanna asking about the recent befriending, the singer replied bluntly:” its fuckin twitter, not the alter! Calm down”. Too harsh? Not really. Well maybe the use of the F word was unnecessary. Regardless, celebrity or not, a woman is entitled to her privacy, especially with something so personal.
The issue is that the current culture of obsession we are feeding places celebrities, pro-athletes and anyone in the spotlight on a pedestal and insists that once one reaches celebrity status, they forgo all rights to privacy. Does this make sense to you? I hope not.
I do agree that it is incredibly annoying to hear celebrities whine about their lack of privacy, considering all the perks that come with fame. However, I do think that something so intimate should not be scrutinized. Where the singer eats, or what stores she shops at is fair game so ask away, but how she’s coping with her abusive ex boyfriend is crossing boundaries.
My solution. Don’t post personal things on Twitter! Or Facebook for that matter. Not just celebrities but everyone. Sometimes, the less people know, the better. Besides, everyone always talks smack about “over sharers” who chronicle the details of their heartbreaks online.
