Celebrities, socialites, and fashion designers walked the red carpet at the Costume Institute Gala that took place in New York City last night. The event marks the opening of the late Alexander McQueen’s fashion exhibit, Savage Beauty, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The abundance of aesthetically pleasing fashion forward pieces revealed lots of up and coming trends as well as iconic statement pieces that have been staples in the fashion world for longer then we can remember. Who do you think was best dressed at the 2011 MET Ball?
Trend # 1: Going Backless...
Victoria Secret model Lily Aldridge is wearing a champagne colored silk backless gown by Ralph Lauren. The back highlights jewel details and a chiffon train.
Gwyneth Paltrow proves that backless gowns are not only sexy, but if done well, exude elegance. The actress is wearing a long sleeved crystal embroidered nude dress by Stella McCartney.
Eat your heart out Bradley Cooper! Newly single Renee Zellweger looks stunning in a long sleeved gold Carolina Herrera gown. Zellweger wore a simple up do and minimal jewelry, keeping the attention on her flattering backside.
Trend #2: The 'Short' Train:
Expecting mom Kate Hudson chose a gold, crystal embroidered, strapless gown by Stella McCartney.
Madonna wore a fitted blue-green Stella McCartney dress to the 2011 MET gala. Opting for a smaller train, the singer chose to add decadence with star embroidery on the train and at the side of her dress.
Michelle Williams is wearing a silk black gown by Miu Miu. The gown has a backless feature with sequin swallows embroidered in gold.
The 'Long' Train:
Model Gisele Bundchen paid tribute to McQueen in a red-hot bustier gown from the late designers collection. The layered pleats composing the train add all the flare that this number needs.
Ashley Greene looks elegant in this one-of-a kind Donna Karan gown. The blush colored strapless piece is draped in tulle and embroidered in sequins that form a-wait for it-fishbone pattern.

Diane Kruger shows some leg in this black silk chiffon skirt by Jason Wu. She pairs the skirt with a nude chantilly lace top draped in custom embroidered wheels.
Actress turned model Brooklyn Decker is spotted wearing two hot trends of the night, long sleeves and a dress that shows some leg! The hot pink Michael Kors dress is figure flattering and needs little accessories to compliment the bold colour.
Former Victoria Secret model turned actress Rosie Huntington- Whitely attended the gala in a custom silk rose gown by Burberry.
Trend #5: Paying Homage Through Fashion
Sarah Jessica Parker paid homage to the late designer in a gown from Alexander McQueen’s 2005 collection. The three quarter sleeved crystal embellished gown needed little accessorizing. Thee actress’ simple up-do and makeup paired perfectly with the decadence of the gown.
Honorary chair of the Costume Institute Gala, Salma Hayek hosted last night’s event in haute couture peach organza dress by Alexander McQueen. The dress reveals a feminine side to the McQueen collection.
Karen Elson paid tribute to McQueen in a silver embroidered chiffon dress from his 2004 collection.
Sarah Burton, attended the event in a white gown by Alexander McQueen. The former head of womenswear for the McQueen label was promoted to head of creative direction after the designers suicide.
