Celebration of Gospel 2011 (After viewing the show)

Last night the Celebration of Gospel aired. I felt that it was a well put together show that had an abundance of talent in which was showcased on the show. Another thing that I enjoyed about the show was the fact that there was a variety of performers and multiple songs that were different tempos.
I felt that I was able to be uplifted and feel a sense of worship.  Steve Harvey hosted the show and he did pretty well might I say but I expected that from Steve and come on he has hosted all the other shows. Also Whitney Houston made an apperance and song along side Kim Burrell, which showcased thier vocal abilties. But the thing that impressed me the most is that this show is on its 11th run and is still giving good shows that keep my attention.

Mad Men

I have finally got around to beginning to watch the much lauded Mad Men - and I LOVE it! I just finished Season Two. It is set at the beginning of the 60's on Madison Avenue, the advertising hub of New York. It's the era of JFK & Jackie, television, martinis, the Rat Pack, Marilyn Monroe and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The corporate Boy's Club antics of long, gout-inducing lunches, smoking & swilling martinis and scotch in the office and lewd treatment of secretaries is interesting. And sometimes not so retro! Don is calculatingly cool and even at his worst, still exudes a hypnotic Clooney-esque charm, even while you sympathize with his long suffering, sweet trophy-wife, Betty. (Although in Season Two, she appears to be growing claws!)
I love the mise-en scene - the 60's furniture, Don's Buick, Betty-Crocker style kitchens and the dark tones, walnut paneling and low furniture at the Madison Avenue offices of Sterling Cooper. As for the fashion - well! Divine! Interestingly, the sets reminded me of the slick, sexy, masculine style of the George Falconer's beautiful 'glass house' in a ‘A Single Man', set in 1962, directed by designer Tom Ford and starring Colin Firth. Then I read on this Blog that Mad Mens Production Designer Dan Bishop has won three awards for Art Direction - and also worked on the set of ‘A Single Man’! Amazing how like attracts like!
I am adoring Betty Draper's polished, glacial Grace Kelly-as-housewife look with her headbands, full skirts and fitted sweaters, with not a flaxen hair out of place. And the ever present cigarette! (I also love the fact that January Jones has not had her teeth fixed with veneers, giving her such a more appealing look).
And of course Joan (Christina Hendricks), with her amazing hour-glass style curves pored into the most fitting dresses. Her flaming locks and fuchsia pink, fire truck red and shocking blue outfits scream are spectacular.
Channel your inner-Joan with pencil skirts, cinched in waists, a great bra, fitted sweaters, ruby-red matte lipstick and swept up back-combed do's.

A lot of MAC makeup is used for the Mad Men women, as explained here. Great to see that Joan's dramatic cat eyes are created by one of my fave MAC liners, Blacktrack. Black eyeliner, matte lips and cinched in, tailored suits will never date!

The J&B Met: Larger than Life indeed!

What better way than experiencing my first J&B Met than in VIP style? Saturday afternoon we drove to Kenilworth Race Course for Cape Town's biggest outdoor, and most anticipated, event of the year. This year the theme was larger than life. Large hats, large accessories and large personalities were seen everywhere. Upon arrival, a shuttle takes you to the main gate, which was very convenient. I spent most of my day in our tent, Bedouin 2, drinking Mojitos and Moët or rubbing shoulders with uber hot people! This tent was filled with good genes, couture and botox. I walked around the site once and then I saw it all. Loads of tents, media here and there, a few funny outfits, loads of sand and hardly any celebs. But I still had an amazing time and I think everyone should attend The J&B Met at least once. It's not overrated, but it definitely lives up to the hype. I must admit though, if it wasn't for the tent we sat in (with soft seats, free bar, great food, shade and a great view of the race), I probably would not have enjoyed myself as much. It was a really hot day, so the last thing you want to do, is get drunk in the sun, but that didn't stop the people. It was one huge party!

Anyway, back to the Met. I didn't really watch the race or, actually, didn't really take note of which horse is winning. I only remember number 13 winning a race and that was the one time I told my boyfriend not to bet on 'unlucky 13'. My bad. Here are some pictures of the day.

On the way to the J&B Met and very amped!

Show-offs!

The tent, Bedouin 2, was small, but very exclusive.

Pretty hats were seen everywhere!

My dress, clutch and accessories are all from Forever New.

My hot friends!

Everyone made an effort with their outfits and looked fabulous! I love my Aldo shoes!

Me and the boyfriend!

The boys enjoyed cocktails while waiting for the next race to start.

Around every corner there was entertainment of some sort. This was outside our tent.

Even though there were sand, grass and uneven ground, the majority of girls wore high heels!

Believe it or not, those are two men rocking those dresses!

My friend and I, coincidently, had matching pink clutch bags.

The horses warming up before the big race.

Pretty things and fashionable people spotted in and around our tent.
My sister joined the Met a bit later. Here we're pictured with ANC National Executive Committee Member, Tony Yengeni and his wife,  Lunka. Dispite his drunk driving cases or the fraud he commits, he's actually really nice!

Lee-Ann Liebenberg and her fiancé, Nicky van der Walt sat in the same tent as us. Lee-Ann is very very very hot in real life! All attention was shifted to her when she set foot inside the tent! Here she is pictured with my boyfriend.

How hot is Lee-Ann and Nicky? There should be a law against hot couples breeding. Who looks that hot and in shape after having a baby? Ridiculous.

We couldn't resist the treats at the dessert table.

Some time, and a few bottles of champagne, later, we found ourselves partying at the J&B VIP after party.

Another Thunda.com photo I honestly don't remember posing for! My friend sent this to me this morning. Yes, it seems that we have a case of peak-a-boobie! And that is money in my top, not toilet paper.

I really had an amazing time and I will definitely go again next year!
